Bison Coffee

Bison Coffee and the man himself, Gavin Burke, are probably the definition of indie here in York. He has not only DJ’d on French radio, but has also helped start up various independent businesses in York such as Earworm Records, a local art gallery and a vintage coffee shop (I’m sure to only mention a few!)

This very small and cosy coffee shop is very unique in the sense that practically everything in it is for sale: from old books, jars, vintage teaspoons to coffee beans and of course the furniture. The newest employee is also his very hilarious Nan who definitely adds an air of charm to the place. You always feel very welcome walking in, despite the busyness, and there’s even the chance to leave your mark by etching your name in chalk on the loyalty board.

The coffee is always top quality alongside the banter and occasional atmospheric beats. There are locally sourced treats to indulge in, of which I would highly recommend the raspberry and white chocolate brownie…it is the best! Everything in there is very reasonably priced, which makes it even more of a delight and numerous visits are easily justifiable- especially for students. Bison coffee also hosts live music events some evenings. I’ve heard they’re pretty awesome.

It’s very possible that you won’t get a seat on a Wednesday afternoon, so maybe give the other days of the week a go instead. You definitely cannot give this place a miss if you’re tracking down the indie gems in York. It would be wrong. So make sure you pop in and enjoy everything it has to offer.
